Why choose roman blinds for your kitchen

Roman curtains have a lot of advantages. They combine the beauty of curtains and the convenience of blinds, and are great for installation on a kitchen window.

Roman curtains are attached to the top of the cornice and are a dense strip of fabric that gathers folds when lifting. They are lifted with the help of the rails attached on the back side and the control cord.

At the very bottom is a special weighting plate, thanks to which the curtains always maintain a perfectly even shape.

Why buy roman blinds?  There are several reasons for this.

Roman curtains look very attractive and stylish, both assembled and loose. They make the room more comfortable and elegant.

Due to the short length, this product is practical, it is more difficult to stain, it retains its original appearance longer.

Due to the fact that the length of the Roman curtains can be adjusted at your discretion, it is possible to control the illumination of the room during the day.

If desired, Roman curtains can be successfully combined with curtains or lambrequins - this method is often chosen if there is a need to zone the room in the kitchen, living room or studio.

This curtain model is ideal for small kitchens, as it does not overload the room and looks very neat.

Roman curtains can be easily combined with any style of interior - the main thing is to choose the right model.

You can even make such curtains with your own hands, spending only a few hours on it, with a minimum consumption of fabric.

The product is removed very simply, it is very easy to wash and dries quickly, instantly smoothed out thanks to the weighting plate.

Roman curtains reliably protect residents of private houses and apartments on the lower floors from prying eyes.

Raising or lowering them to the desired height can be done in one simple movement, without even touching the curtains themselves (which is very convenient in the process of cooking).

The product is inexpensive, and looks elegant.

What are Roman curtains

Roman curtains, often referred to as roller blinds, were first used by people several millennia ago in the Roman Empire (hence their modern name).

Surprisingly, despite the huge period of time from the moment the product was invented to the present day, the design of the curtains almost did not change and remained the same. This is explained by the fact that in the manufacture of such a model uses a very simple cut and regulating mechanism.

Roman curtains have strict straight lines and a clear shape, they are elegant and concise.

The changes affected only the materials used - fabrics and additional decorative elements.

Currently, two varieties of Roman curtains are popular: cascading  and classic. Both models have their own characteristics and advantages.

Roman curtains classic  - such a model is a smooth and even canvas, which forms horizontal folds superimposed upon lifting. These curtains look very simple and elegant, they easily fit into any kitchen interior.

Roman curtains cascading - even with full disclosure, such a model has folds going down in a cascade, forming a beautiful drapery. Most often, such curtains are installed in rooms whose interior is made in the style of country, art deco, as well as in some traditional styles.

The material from which Roman curtains are made

For sewing Roman curtains, a variety of fabrics are used, both natural and synthetic. Their choice, first of all, depends on the style of the room in which the curtains will be installed.

If the room is located on the south side, the curtain material should be sufficiently dense, then they will provide reliable protection from sunlight.

If the room lacks natural light, you should choose curtains made of fabric with the least possible protection from sunlight - this material consists of polyester with the addition of natural viscose fiber or cotton.

The choice of color Roman curtains for the kitchen

Correctly selected color of Roman curtains will help create a warm atmosphere in the kitchen, make it more comfortable and attractive.

Brown Roman Curtains  - several centuries ago it was this color that was a sign of luxury and wealth. Roman shades of brown shades are ideal for kitchens whose interior is made in classic styles.

They are perfectly combined with furniture from a natural tree of all breeds, do not look catchy and elegant. In addition, brown curtains reliably protect the room from scorching sunlight.

A model of this color is perfectly combined with a huge number of neutral and warm tones. Brown Roman curtains can have a variety of colors: chocolate, coffee, copper, caramel, the color of sand or walnut, cream, beige and terracotta.

These shades can be combined with each other, or combined with other colors: pale blue, pink, olive, pistachio, lilac.

Beige Roman Curtains  - An ideal option for a kitchen in any style. Perfectly combined with all shades. Most often used to create classic interiors.

Beige Roman curtains can be complemented with darker decorative elements or a lambrequin.

When buying a product of this shade, it is worth giving preference to a dense synthetic fabric, since it will have to be washed more often.

Beige color is universal, such curtains are suitable for small kitchens with windows that let in little sunlight.

Red roman curtains - A very bold decision, which can be applied by no means in every kitchen. Red curtains can be installed on medium or large windows.
The shade of the product should not be too provocative and bright, it is recommended to give preference to more muted and noble tones - for example, burgundy.

Bright Roman red curtains will decorate the room, made in the style of hi-tech or minimalism, they will be perfectly combined with glossy surfaces and furniture fronts.

Green roman curtains  - will be a great addition to the kitchen, the interior of which is made in both modern and classic styles.

They will make the room more comfortable and warm, create the most favorable and relaxing atmosphere in it.

Depending on the chosen interior style, the shade of green Roman curtains can be very different: light green, swamp, grass, emerald, olive, pistachio, sea-green and so on.

Black Roman Curtains  - are suitable exclusively for spacious rooms with good natural and artificial lighting.

So that the kitchen does not look too mournful and gloomy, it is recommended to combine the black color of the curtains with white, beige and other light shades.

Roman curtains with a pattern  - a small floral ornament will be the perfect solution when arranging a kitchen in the style of shabby chic, provence, country or rustic style.

These curtains look very nice and combine perfectly with natural wooden furniture, pottery and other ethnic elements of the interior.

When arranging the kitchen in modern styles, it is worth using synthetic curtains with strict geometric patterns.

How to combine Roman and ordinary curtains in the interior of the kitchen

Roman curtains look stylish and elegant, but still somewhat strict. Sometimes you want to soften this severity with soft folds of light textile, and then ordinary traditional curtains come to the rescue.
They are perfectly combined with rolled curtains and supplement them.

However, if the window is too small, you should not combine both options. This solution will not work for kitchens whose interior is made in such styles as minimalism or hi-tech.

If the interior of the room is classical, then Roman curtains can be combined with traditional curtains.

They can be made in one color scheme, or be contrasted (the first option looks more elegant and harmonious). Tulle in this case is not required, it is not necessary to install lambrequins, so as not to overload the kitchen with unnecessary details.

If the window is narrow and tall, you can place the curtain on only one side of it, bandaging the tape in the middle.

The large window should be decorated with two traditional curtains. It is desirable that their fabric is lighter and less dense than the Roman curtains with which they are combined.

The choice of Roman curtains in accordance with the style of the interior

For kitchens whose interior is made in styles such as Provence, country, rustic, Mediterranean, shabby chic, you should choose Roman curtains from light natural materials of light shades - lavender, cream, blue, light yellow, coffee with milk, pistachio, pink, white.

Checkered prints or floral ornaments will look great in such interiors.

For a kitchen in a modern style, it is recommended to choose plain Roman curtains from synthetic materials in saturated colors - blue, red, purple, orange, brown, black. They should be simple and concise, without decorative elements.

What Roman curtains to choose for the kitchen-living room

For such a room, you should choose lightweight Roman cascading curtains, and they can be combined with classic curtains, or you can choose a tulle for them.

In addition, Roman curtains are indispensable when it is necessary to zone the room. They are easy to install and quickly adjustable in height, combining both kitchen areas.

As for the material, it is preferable to choose natural fabrics of light, discreet colors.

Roman curtains for a small kitchen

If the kitchen is small, then the Roman curtains will be the perfect solution for it. They do not “steal” space and take up almost no space.

The main thing is to choose a product from light material - it can be both synthetic and natural.

For a narrow kitchen, horizontal striped curtains are perfect.

With a low ceiling, it is worth choosing Roman curtains with a vertical strip.

The additional use of traditional curtains in a small kitchen should be discarded.

That is why, choosing the appropriate option, customers are increasingly opting for Roman blinds. Long-lasting, practical products will delight the owners and their guests for many years.

The main criteria for choosing Roman curtains

The selection of such designs for the arrangement of the kitchen is a very complex, time-consuming process, while the buyer has to consider many factors:

  1. To equip a large-sized kitchen, you should opt for products made in calm, pastel colors. It is strongly not recommended to use curtains decorated with large drawings, patterns, colors, and so on for arranging the windows of a small-sized kitchen room.
  2. Products should ideally fit into the overall design of the room, in color to be combined with furniture and other objects surrounding them. Do not use structures made of heavy fabrics to equip a small-sized kitchen. When choosing the appropriate option for curtains, you should pay special attention to the material from which this product is made.
  3. The latest models of striped curtains look very original and elegant in the interior of the kitchen. However, such designs will ideally fit far from every stylistic interior design. It should be noted that a strip located horizontally visually increases the space of a room, and a vertical one narrows it. Therefore, when choosing such products, it is important to take into account the dimensions of the room.

Roman curtains appeared on the modern specialized market relatively recently. However, in a short period of time, they have become very popular and in demand among buyers. This is due to the aesthetically attractive external data of such structures, excellent technical and operational characteristics. In addition, it is quite simple to take care of such structures, you just need to clean them regularly, or wash in an ordinary washing machine. However, in order to avoid deformation of the curtain, after washing, it is necessary to properly dry the product using a conventional iron.

In addition, to clean such a device, you can use a vacuum cleaner, which is in every house. It is very convenient, the curtain does not even have to be removed from the cornice. Just a few minutes will be required in order to return the product to its original external data. All this speaks in favor of the Roman curtains.

Therefore, choosing the best option for curtains for arranging a kitchen, many experts recommend paying attention to Roman curtains. Such designs will not only become an indispensable attribute of your kitchen, but also fill it with unique coziness and warmth, help create a comfortable atmosphere in the room.

It is believed that Roman curtains were invented in ancient Rome. Their variety can be called rolled. Interestingly, the cut and the mechanism of the curtains is so perfect that more than 2000 years have passed since their inception, and they have not changed their appearance in any way. The changes affected only the fabric, added additional decor.

The appearance of curtains of this design was due to the heyday of the Roman Empire. In those days, the owners of houses whose windows looked onto the streets suffered from a huge amount of dust raised by horse-drawn carriages. There were no glasses on the windows, so there was no way to protect your home from such an unpleasant phenomenon. The heat was also inconvenient.

Resourceful Romans began to hang their windows with large pieces of cloth dipped in water. A damp cloth at the same time prevented the penetration of dust and kept cool indoors.

Over time, the curtains became more beautiful, and their design improved. The women of Rome loved to decorate their homes with frescoes, mosaics. Of course, curtains have become an integral part of the decor. The fabric used was striking in colors and print. Of course, the richest people of Rome had the most beautiful and expensive curtains.

Roman curtains in the kitchen are the embodiment of elegance with all their brevity and minimalism. They look neat, easy to care for, which is important for the kitchen.

Construction mechanism

Essential elements:

  • Cornice. Often made of plastic.
  • Cloth made of fabric, attached to the cornice with a special “Velcro tape”.
  • The lifting mechanism collecting fabric in horizontal folds. It can be rotary-chain (ideal for heavy fabrics), rope-lifting, have electronic control.
  • A special chain that drives the entire structure.
  • Weighting agent in the form of a strap. It is located at the bottom of the curtains.

You can fix the curtains on the entire window opening or on each leaf separately, if the window is large.

Modern design 2017 - new items in the interior

R home curtains can be compared with blinds. However, textiles look more comfortable.

The practicality of this type of curtains makes them indispensable for the kitchen. You can easily set the desired length, providing the kitchen with the necessary level of lighting. Plus, this functionality is important if you have a fluffy kitten living at home, who during his games likes to climb higher and make unpleasant puffs on the fabric. Raising the curtain to the desired level, you will block the access of the fluffy prankster to the curtain.

Modern Roman curtains are divided into three types:

  • Cascading.  These are very beautiful curtains that, even when fully dissolved, form folds and draperies. They will perfectly fit into the interior of the living room or bedroom.

  • Classic. They have a simple design. In the dissolved form, they are a smooth cloth that covers the entire window opening. Folds form when assembled. Ideal for children's room and kitchen.

  • Frameless. Their feature is the absence of hinges. They can be considered the simplest variety of Roman curtains that can be done independently.

To choose the right curtains for the kitchen, you should be guided by simple rules:

  • Whether it’s ready-made curtains or you decide to purchase fabric and sew them yourself, you need to measure the window opening. At the same time, if the curtain is located in the opening itself, then the length of the fabric should be reduced by 2-4 cm, and the width by 2 cm. If the curtain is located in front of the window opening, then in this case it is necessary to select the fabric so that its width exceeded the opening by at least 10-20 cm.

  • When choosing a fabric, opt for one that consists of both synthetic and natural fibers. Such curtains will be easy to care for, and they will not get so dirty as curtains made from natural fabrics.

Fabrics based on synthetic fibers are also acceptable for the kitchen. They are easily erased and maintain color saturation for a long time.

  • Roman curtains must certainly match the design of the kitchen and the color scheme of its interior. Light curtains made of delicate fabrics are suitable for small kitchens. Pastel shades visually make the room bigger. If a print is applied to the fabric, then it should be slightly noticeable so as not to burden the design.

If the kitchen windows face the south side, thick curtains will help to get rid of the summer heat.

Designers offer interesting novelties that will help turn the kitchen into a cozy place to gather a family for a cup of tea.

Combination with curtains, lambrequin

Roman curtains go well with curtains. A set of monophonic curtains and Roman curtains with a light pattern in bright yellow colors will cheer you up.

Combining different textures of fabrics, you can achieve a stunning effect. A translucent Roman curtain, a curtain made of tulle or organza, a dense curtain, a lambrequin - all this looks harmonious, despite the large number of components. The tulle is seized with a fabric holder to form light folds so that the entire structure does not look flat.

Lambrequin will perfectly complement a large window. An interesting solution would be to use several Roman curtains with floral prints. In order for the lambrequin to be noticeable and not to turn the window decoration into one “flower” mass, its longer fabric strip should be monophonic. This technique favorably emphasizes the beautiful folds of the pelmet and relieves the print.

Lambrequin does not have to be bulky and pretentious. On the kitchen window of a small size, the dense plain fabric of Roman curtains and the light, pleated, organza with a pattern of leaves "get along" perfectly.

Lambrequin can add lightness and chic if it is made of a transparent material.

Textured fabrics

The fabrics having a relief, despite laconicism, look fashionable and stylish.

Asymmetry

The reception of asymmetry adds a touch of sophistication. As a rule, a lambrequin or a light organza is used for this. An additional canvas is placed on top of the Roman curtains, shifted to one side and grabbed with decorative cords to form folds. Asymmetric pelmet with an abundance of folds looks luxurious, but it is not suitable for a small kitchen.

Striped print

The peculiarity of the striped fabric is that it not only embodies interesting design decisions into reality, but also visually adjusts the size of the room. Roman curtains with horizontal stripes will make the window wider. Accordingly, the vertical strip will “stretch” the window vertically.

A curtain in a two-color strip looks concise and strict. If you want to make the kitchen bright, then choose a fabric from several colored stripes.

Bottom decor

The peculiarity of Roman curtains is their simplicity, but the additional decor to them is quite applicable. Fluffy pompons, fringe and even rhinestones look very cute. The bottom of a transparent curtain can be decorated with small tassels. The most important rule of this decor is the small size of the elements that are sewn onto the edge of the curtain.

Roman curtains allow you to create a cozy kitchen interior in various styles.

In order to design a kitchen window in the Provence style, use a cotton or mixed fabric. Belts acting as a lifting mechanism look very organic.

Advocates of modern design can afford hi-tech curtains. It should be remembered that the interior of such a kitchen should be restrained, and the curtains should not have a pronounced texture. As an option - a translucent fabric that has a frame of a denser fabric.

Country style is the embodiment of comfort in the kitchen. To create it, Roman curtains with floral print, checkered, striped.

How to do it yourself

To make a Roman curtain, you will need items that you can easily buy in hardware stores and needlework boutiques:

  • Fabrics purchased at the store: basic and lining (if necessary);
  • Velcro tape, the length of which corresponds to the width of the Roman curtains;
  • Rods / slats with a diameter of 0.5 cm from wood or plastic. Compared to the width of the curtains, they are 3 cm shorter than it. A total of 7-8 such rods will be required;
  • Rings made of plastic, the diameter of which is 1 cm. They are needed for threading the cords in them, ensuring the lifting of the canvas;

  • Nylon cords - 3 cuts. To calculate the length of each, you need to sum the double length of the curtain and its width;
  • Plank, weighting the product;
  • Finishing border;
  • A bar made of wood (5 cm x 2.5 cm), performing the function of a cornice. Its length corresponds to the width of the curtain;
  • Additional auxiliary material (hooks, screws, nails);
  • Stapler.

Initially, it is necessary to measure the window opening and add to allowances: the side parts of 5 cm, 10 cm in the upper and lower parts. The fabric may “sit down” after washing. therefore before starting cutting, it should be wetted in warm water, dried and ironed.  Next, using the table, we determine the number of folds of the future curtains. We mark them, as well as the location of the rings, dotted on the wrong side of the fabric.

Fold and hem side edges and hem twice.

And beautiful as curtains, but because this is the most win-win option for window decoration in the kitchen. For those who plan to buy, sew or order them and are in search of ideas, we have compiled a guide for choosing Roman curtains for the kitchen with useful links to Russian and foreign online stores and a selection of inspiring photos.

  • This type of curtains is a cloth of fabric, which is folded during lifting. Curtains are fixed from the top to the cornice, rails are sewn to the back of the fabric, which the control cord lifts. At the bottom of the canvas has a weighting plate.

  1. They look very beautiful.  In the dissolved form, the canvas of the Roman curtains looks neat and elegant, and when assembled - it makes the interior more comfortable due to soft and even folds.
  2.   More practical due to their short length.
  3. Their length, and hence the lighting of the kitchen can be easily adjusted.  By the principle of assembly, they look like blinds, but Roman curtains look much more comfortable - not so simple and "office". They are also often compared with fabric roller blinds, but unlike them, the length of the Roman cloth is easier to adjust.
  4. They can be combined with curtains and / or lambrequin.  If you wish, you can combine curtains and / or with Roman curtains. This solution is especially relevant for and, if only Roman curtains are hung in the kitchen area, and the same Roman curtains in the dining / living area, but with curtains. An example of such zoning is presented in the photo below.

  1. Do not overload the interior and are especially good for small kitchens. Roman curtains repeat the size of the window and have a not too lush assembly. This makes them the ideal type of curtain for or simple interiors.

  1. Fit into the interior of the kitchen of any style.  Depending on the design and decor of the fabric, the curtains can decorate the kitchen of any style: classic, provence, country, shabby chic, modern, high-tech, loft, minimalism, Scandinavian, etc. Each style can be found on our website in the section.

  1. They can be. These curtains can be sewn in just a couple of hours, while the fabric consumption will be minimal.
  2. Easy to care. Easy to remove, wash and dry, smoothing out under the weight of the weight plate.

But even this type of curtain has its drawbacks, for example, it should be borne in mind that, most likely, by hanging such curtains on the windows, it will become inconvenient to open them wide open.

5 things you need to know before buying roman blinds

  1. What size should the curtains be?  Before you buy, sew or order curtains in the studio, you should take measurements of the window and determine the required dimensions of the canvas in the finished form. The sizes of Roman curtains depend on the method of their fastening:
  • Inside the window opening - in this case, the length should be such that their lower edge in the dissolved form is about 2 cm behind the window sill. As for the width of the curtains and the length of the cornice, they should also be 1-2 cm less than the width of the window opening ;

  • In front of a window with a cornice mounted on a wall or ceiling - then the width should be at least 10 cm (preferably 20 cm) greater than the width of the window. In principle, you can choose a wide web width, for example, in order to hide the pipe. The length of the finished product can be such as to cover the window sill by about 10 cm.

  1. What fabrics to choose for Roman curtains in the kitchen?  Any fabric can be used for sewing - from velvet to.

Synthetic fabrics in the kitchen will be as practical as possible, but they may not look very beautiful, while natural fabrics (linen, cotton, etc.) will give strong shrinkage, it is difficult to wash and iron.

Therefore, mixed fabrics will be the best “kitchen” option in terms of aesthetics and practicality - they look good, absorb odors less and fade in the sun, and are also easier to wash and iron.

There is also an alternative - Roman woven bamboo curtains (pictured below), which will be easy to care for and natural.

  1. What color and design to choose?
  • If the kitchen is small, then try to choose light curtains with an unobtrusive pattern, so as not to overload the already small space with many things. Bright and colorful fabrics are appropriate only if the interior of the kitchen is designed mainly in bright colors;

  •   , then choose curtains in a horizontal strip. If there is a problem with low ceilings, then it is worth choosing curtains in a vertical strip. Examples of striped design, see below in the photo;

  • And, of course, you need to consider the style of the interior of the kitchen. Provence and country are characterized by natural colors and rustic motifs in the decor - a cage, peas, cockerels, flowers, embroidery, lace, bows, etc.

Classic curtains should be either strict and simple, or have traditional patterns, such as cages, Damascus or floral ornaments, while the quality of the fabric should be excellent.

For a Scandinavian kitchen interior, fabrics of either neutral or bright colors with original prints, for example, in the color block style, are suitable. Well, in minimalist interiors and curtain design should be as minimalistic.

  1.   How to make large windows or a window with a balcony door?
  • If the window is too wide, then it is better to hang it with several paintings, and not one;
  • If the kitchen window is combined with a balcony door, then you can hang two canvases, as shown in the following image.

Sometimes Roman curtains in the kitchen are combined with tulle (as in the following photos). 2. It's time to start sewing. Sew the side edges of the fabric.
  3. Attach Velcro to the bottom of a timber beam using a furniture stapler or studs. Sew the top of the curtain and attach the Velcro that remains. Thanks to this, you can remove the curtains without difficulty.
  4. Fold the fabric at the bottom of the curtain so that a pocket forms (later on you will need to insert a weighting agent).
  5. Sew the trimmer to the wrong side of the fabric. It turned out peculiar pockets in which you need to insert the slats.
  6. Using the table below, mark the location of the rings on the curtains and sew them yourself.
  7. Attach the curtain to the beam (Velcro will help). Attach the mounting part of the cord to the window frame. Next, the cord must be wrapped around the frame in order for the curtain to be fixed. Pass the cord through the ring and tie a knot on its lower part.
  8. Now the cord needs to be passed through all the rings to the very top of the curtain. Do the same with all rings until all the cords are on one side of the curtain (see diagram below). Now we have folds: they need to be fixed (ribbons will help).
  9. Next, attach the wooden beam to the window frame. The curtain holding straps can be removed. After that, you should tie the cords into a knot. Now pass the cords through the handle that lifts the curtains and measure 46 cm from the first knot. After that, you need to tie another knot and trim the ends.
  10. Fix the part that secures the cord to the window frame and wrap the cord around it to secure the curtain.
